Trekking informations

The Trek

Maromokotro is the highest mountain on Madagascar at 2,876 m (9,436 feet ) high. It is located in the Tsaratanana Massif in the Northern part of the island. . It is remote and can only be reached on foot crossing savannah, thick forest and mountain plateau. The round trip usually takes 14-16 days

Beautiful campsites, traditional Malagasy Villages, clean rivers and stunning wildlife are only a few of the wonders which await you.

Useful Information

Money changing can be difficult in Diego Suarez. Traveler's cheques will only be accepted with the original receipt. It is recommended that you bring cash, preferably in euros, as these are the best currency to use/exchange.

 Flights to/from Tana to Diego can be booked on your behalf. The carrier is Air Madagascar .

  Accommodation in Ivato can also be booked in advance.

   

Trek Itinerary

  This itinerary is meant as a guide to the trip. Timings in brackets are approximate and can change due to weather conditions and client ability.

  Please add 2 -3 hrs to every day for extended lunchtime break due to the heat of the midday sun.

  Day 1 – Arrive Diego Suarez. Meet guide and tour Diego. Stay in local hotel

  Day 2 – Take 4WD to village of Ambilobe . Overnight camp at local school

  Day 3 – Begin trek. Open savannah walking to village of Tsaradoany . (9hrs)

  Day 4 – Trek over open savannah to village of Ambodisaina . (9 hrs)

  Day 5 – Trek to remote campsite crossing Bemokoty River numerous times (8hrs)

  Day 6 – Shorter day to camp 5 against huge boulder and waterfall (6hrs)

  Day 7 – The climbing begins! Undulating country to cross to camp 6 (8hrs)

  Day 8 – Easy/Rest day at beautiful riverside camp (2hrs)

  Day 9 – Walk through jungle and scrub as we climb close to Maromokotro. (8hrs)

Day 10 – Summit Day. Climb to the top of Madagascar 2876m (9436ft) (10hrs)

Day 11 – Long jungle day away from the peaks with riverside camp (10hrs)

Day 12 – Easy/Rest Day. Camp in village of Ampanihy . (4hrs)

Day 13 – Cross undulating mountain country to riverside camp. (8hrs)

Day 14 – Leave the mountains and cross Ramena River 9 times to village of Tsaradoany . (10hrs)

Day 15 – Final trek day. Walk to village of Antsirasira . Transfer to Taxi Brousse and end trek in Ambanja. Stay in local hotel.

Day 16 – Drive Ambanja – Diego Suarez. Stay in local hotel.

Kit List

The following is a suggested list of equipment to bring. Madagascar may be tropical at the coast, but once in the mountains it can be very cold in the evenings.

River crossings will be commonplace, so please protect all your equipment with waterproof bags.

Main Rucksack – 60L or larger for main kit

Day sack – for your personal daily kit

Canoe Dry Bags – For River Crossings

Walking Boots and Spare Laces

Sandals – for river crossings and relaxing the evenings away

Walking Socks – 2 or 3 pairs

Long Sleeved Shirts/Tops – for walking and keeping the daytime sun off!

Lightweight Trousers – Zip offs are ideal

Shorts (zip off trousers will do both)

General Underwear/Evening Relaxing Clothes

Warm Jumper/Fleece- evenings in the mountains are cold!

Swimming Costume/Shorts etc

Waterproof Jacket – (Trousers optional)

Sleeping Bag – 2-3 seasons recommended

Sleeping Liner/Sheet

Tent – Optional but recommended.
